Rose Wetzel

Mid and Long Distance Runner

Bio

Rose Wetzel loves the thrill of racing and the challenge of competition. While she enjoys training, her true motivation lies in the ability to line up with other fast athletes and push herself to the max.

Between track, cross country, and road racing, throughout high school, college, and beyond, Rose has run hundreds of races, ranging from 250 yards in the mud to the Boston Marathon. She likes the variety to keep things interesting, and sometimes even races in crazy costumes for fun!

Rose ran for four years at Georgetown University on an athletic scholarship and now competes for Club Northwest/Brooks. She recently won the 5k and 1500 meter races at the 2010 USATF Club National Championships and is training harder than ever to compete internationally this upcoming cross country season. Her goal for 2011 is to make the 2012 US Olympic Trials.

Rose's personal records include the following:

  • Mile - 4:46
  • 5k - 16:27
  • 6k - 21:52

Interview with Rose

What is your favorite thing about running?

My very favorite?! Hmmm. That’s tough. I really appreciate the sense of freedom and relaxation I get when I go out for a run in nature, but my favorite thing about running is racing. Sprinting full force at the end of a race, finishing ahead of all the competition – talk about a rush! I love getting cheered on and congratulated by friends and complete strangers alike, and it gives me a high the rest of the day. Put simply, I love to win, especially when I really have to fight for it.

How long have you been running?

As a kid, I was a big tomboy and I loved to run around playing soccer and football with my six brothers and two sisters. At a young age, I had to compete for food and attention. When I was 15 years old, I began competitive racing, won my first race, and have been hooked ever since.

What advice would you give future runners?

Be grateful, be grateful, be grateful. Remember that the ability to go out and run is a privilege. Here in the US, we have so many privileges to help us stay healthy and safe, including access to quality food, clean water, and well-kept parks. Enjoy every run!!!

What is your most memorable experience with running?

The first time I won a state championship. It was the 800 meter race my sophomore year in high school and I wasn’t expecting to win. My friends brought me mint chocolate chip ice cream afterwards. It was the best day ever!

What is the hardest thing about running?

The time commitment. The process of mastering the art of running takes away from my ability to spend time doing other activities I enjoy, such as biking, rock climbing, reading, dancing, and socializing.

What is something people don't know about you?

I work as Wonder Woman part-time. Yes, I have an invisible jet.
